Why Vocabulary Matters
Using a rich variety of words and natural expressions boosts your IELTS Speaking score. Instead of repeating the same basic words, you can show range and fluency.
1. Common Synonyms
Replace simple words with better alternatives:
- Good - Excellent, Amazing, Fantastic
- Bad - Poor, Terrible, Unpleasant
- Happy - Cheerful, Content, Delighted
- Important - Crucial, Essential, Significant
Tip: Use synonyms naturally; don’t force them into sentences.
2. Natural Expressions
Using phrases makes your speech sound more natural:
- Instead of “I like reading” - “I’m really into reading”
- Instead of “It’s interesting” - “It really fascinates me”
- Instead of “I think it’s good” - “In my opinion, it’s excellent”
- Instead of “I don’t know” - “I’m not entirely sure, but…”
Tip: Phrases help your answers sound fluent and confident.
3. Practice Drills
Try to use at least one synonym or expression in each answer:
- Pick 5 basic words today and learn 2–3 alternatives for each
- Record yourself using new words in short answers
- Swap simple phrases with natural expressions in your daily practice
Tip: Don’t memorize answers. Just practice replacing words naturally.
